Schooling and Education here and the Philippines... The difference
Wa-hey!! Based on my observations so far... here are the things that I found during the first 2 weeks in school here in United States
I'm currently studying at Cibola High School in Yuma, Arizona. Your other points may differ, but this is what I found. Also, here, I talk about High School, not any other levels..
- You will go through Middle School (Gr. 7-8) before reaching Hign School here. In the Phils. you will be eligible for admission in high school after finishing 6th grade
- You will choose your courses (subjects) here. In the Philippines subjects only differ between schools. The subjects that they will give you is designated for your level. You cannot choose which one will you take.
- Because students here have different courses, we move about the school grounds to find our course rooms every period. In the Phils. we only have one room to stay, we only transfer if needed.
- Teachers here are the ones who stay in their subject/course rooms, the students are the ones who will go to the teacher's rooms. This results to different sets classmates (if you are a freshmen you could have a sophomore or any higher level student in the same class) unless two or more have the same course in the same period. In the Phils. the teachers are the ones to go in each room of each level and section. The students will just stay in their room.
- Transparecies are very commonly used here. In the Phils. teachers write on the board but somettimes they also use tranparencies.
- Here the Pledge of Allegiance is done on your second period (i don't know with other schools). In the Phils. we sing Lupang Hinirang (Philippine National Anthem), we state the Panatang Makabayan(Vow of Nationality)(please correct me) and Panunumpa ng Katapatan sa Watawat ng Pilipinas (Pledge of Loyalty for The Filipino Flag) on Mondays or everyday maybe in other schools before every first period
- Most schools here are only one-storey buildings but have a wide space of land. In the Phils. Most schools have multiple-storey building but the space is not that wide.
- Students here wear civilian clothes everyday(I don't know with other schools). In the Phils. we wear uniforms. We only wear civilian clothes if needed.
- Most schoolbus services here use the typical bus we see on movies. In the Phils. we commonly use vans or L300s or any other vehicle that could accommodate 5 or more students.
- Maybe some of you know this, but most students here do not eat rice. In the Phils. we eat rice everyday.
- The last but not the least, US uses the 0-base grading system, whereas the Phils. uses the 50-base grading system. But, here, 65 is the passing grade, there, lower than 75 is failed.
That's all so far. Maybe sometime I could add more of these. This could help student immigrants to the US to have an overview of what's the difference of schooling in the Philippines and here in the US. Thank you and God Bless..
